Tips for epilepsy patients from The Hong Kong Epilepsy Society in relation to the Covid-19 outbreak

  1. Try not to panic during the outbreak. Follow closely the measures suggested by the Government.

  2. Equip yourself with the appropriate personal protection equipment and observe infection control measures, paying attention to restrictions on travelling and quarantine. Infection and fever may exacerbate seizures in chronic epilepsy.

  3. Pay attention to the arrangement of your chronic medications. In general, even if you cannot visit the hospital or clinic (public or private) in person, your healthcare professionals may provide suitable alternatives to you.

  4. If the hospital or clinic (public or private) postpones your follow-up, or makes a change to your usual visits, please follow their advice and you may need to disclose the travel history of yourself or your carers.

  5. In the following situations, you or your carers may still consider coming to the hospital: your epilepsy is getting worse, or you are experiencing a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes, or you have encountered serious adverse effects from treatment such as an allergy.

  6. Patients with epilepsy who are pregnant should attend their appointments with their doctors on time or contact their doctors for the most appropriate arrangement.

  7. Due to the outbreak, presurgical evaluation of epilepsy may be stopped. As a result, epilepsy surgery may be interrupted. Please contact your hospital or doctor for the best arrangement of your treatment.

  8. Self-medication for the treatment of Covid-19 infection is not advised. If you are so unfortunate as to contract the infection or pneumonia, or being considered a close contact, then you should let your doctors know about your existing epilepsy condition, so that you will receive the best possible treatment.

  9. Please continue to update yourself about the latest news on the outbreak from governmental sources, including those from the Centre for Health Protection, understanding that information may change with time.
